The investigation of the Baltic Anomaly is ongoing and many questions remain. But based on some new information, it appears our theory is gaining credence. Is the Baltic Anomaly a black smoker?
Background on the Baltic Anomaly
On June 19, 2011, the Ocean X Team used side-scan sonar to “photograph” a massive object deep in the Baltic Sea, approximately 260 feet below surface. Peter Lindberg, co-founder of the Ocean X Team, jokingly declared “Hey guys, we have a UFO!” However, after a large publicity campaign and a new expedition, the Ocean X Team discovered the Anomaly primarily consisted of large rocks. The exact nature of those rocks remain a mystery.
New information about the Baltic Anomaly continues to leak out via various press agencies across the world. For the most part, we’re forced to rely on Google Translate, so our translations might be a little off. The latest news comes from Welt Online.
Apparently, the Ocean X Team spotted a 50-meter high mountain shaped like a volcanic cone in the vicinity of the Baltic Anomaly. An “indefinable cloud” oozed out of its peak. The Team speculated this cloud was actually boiling water. The whole thing was shrouded in “very bright red light” and fish “showed unusual patterns of movement.” Incidentally, this structure may account for the mysterious “Rock.”
Back to the Hot Spring Theory
All this calls to mind our theory of an extinguished underwater hot spring, also known as a hydrothermal vent. A hydrothermal vent is created when groundwater in the Earth’s crust is heated by geothermal means and vented out into the sea through a fissure. This super-hot water often contains dissolved minerals. When these minerals contact the water, they can cool and harden. In the process, they form large chimney-shaped structures known as smokers. Some of these smokers have been known to reach as high as sixty meters.
When the dissolved minerals contain large amounts of sulfide, the particles exiting the smoker are colored black. These structures are called black smokers. A white smoker emits lighter colored materials.
We continue to believe one or more extinguished hydrothermal vents created the Baltic Anomaly. When hot water was expelled from black smokers, it caused dissolved minerals to be driven outward. These materials eventually cooled and hardened in the water, forming the strange circular-like object. Eventually, the vents “died.”
“A vent can “die” at any time for several reasons. For example, seismic activity might cause a chimney to collapse. Fluid would then build up in the blocked vent, effectively choking it out. Or the hydrothermal fluid could simply run out, exhausting the vent.” ~ David Meyer, The Baltic Anomaly: The Lost Updates?
Geothermal heat is actually fairly common in the Baltic Sea. And such a vent would help answer some of the more puzzling questions surrounding the phenomena. Take the Ocean X Team’s initial reports of radiation in the area.
“incredible, we have measured the radiative value of the anchors we used. It’s quite intriguing, the normal level of radiation is 0,1 milli Sieverts and we get 0,63 when measuring on the anchors. It’s far from dangorus levels but still; it’s 6 times higher than a normal level of radiation. The anchors have been on the bottom like 2-3 kilometers from the circle, so one can wonder if we will get higher values of radiation the closer we get of the circle?” ~ Ocean X Team, April 2, 2012
Sometimes, black smokers emit radium. In fact, the famous hot springs in Ikaria, Greece, enjoyed by people for thousands of years, are radioactive. Here’s another example of gamma radiation being found in hot (and cold) springs in Jordan.
Also, the Ocean X Team chipped away some rock from the Anomaly and discovered the interior was black. A heavy presence of sulfide would explain this coloring. Sulfide might also explain the substance “resembling soot” which covered the rocks.
Guerrilla Explorer’s Analysis
If our theory of an extinguished black smoker is correct, then the Ocean X Team has a volcanogenic massive sulfide ore deposit on its hands. And that presents a problem.
“The find is not protected by any laws or anything. If the find would be fish, oil, gas or minerals it will belong to a Baltic country since our find is within an economical zone but off the nearest territorial border.” ~ Peter Lindberg, Comment on Another Anomaly 2, August 11, 2011
Previously, we’ve speculated that the Ocean X Team has no real incentive to solve the mystery of the Baltic Anomaly. The mystery is what will sell Titan Television’s documentary as well as the Team’s plans to run submarine tourism trips back and forth to the Anomaly.
“And that bring us to our third conclusion…the Baltic Anomaly will never be solved. That’s not because it can’t be solved but rather because the Ocean X Team has no incentive to solve it. The chances of the Anomaly being anything other than a natural formation are exceedingly small. So, if the Ocean X Team were to answer all the questions, most people would lose interest in the story. Few people would watch a documentary about a natural rock formation. Even fewer people would be willing to pay money to see it on a tour.” – David Meyer, The Baltic Anomaly: What is Going on Here?
And now, we can add another reason to the mix. If the Baltic Anomaly is actually a rich mineral deposit, the Team would have no rights to it. Hence, they have no reason to reveal this fact to the world.
As fellow treasure hunters, we strongly disagree with that fact. As we see it, the Baltic Anomaly falls under the homesteading principle. No one owned it prior to its discovery. The Ocean X Team, on the other hand, is the rightful owner of its own labor. By working the site, the Team added its labor to the mineral deposit and thus, became its rightful owner.
Some unanswered questions remain, namely the “downhill path” consisting of flattened seabed, which leads up to the circular object. However, it’s looking increasingly likely that the Baltic Anomaly might just be leftover material from an extinguished black smoker.

oh dear man…
First you said: But based on some new information, it appears our theory is gaining credence… bla bla.
Then you posted a link(source) based on the new information.
1. That site has a malware byte injection via HTML:iframe… aka you cannot TRUST this shitt.
2. You are based on a 3’rd hand information, aka source is not comming from: The Ocean X Team
So, stop beeing an idiot huh?
1. Welt.de is the website for Die Welt, a large German national daily newspaper with ~200,000 circulation. I’d say it’s as trustworthy as any other major news site.
2. Our analysis is based on primary and secondary sources. Whenever possible we defer to primary sources. Feel free to browse our archive of Baltic Anomaly articles to see what I mean.
post after post, you folks there at guerrilla seem intent on “demonstrating” that this is something “natural” etc etc “not out of the ordinary” Do black smokers shut down electronic equipment, or have straight panels and lines? There are a number of features such as those mentioned that you don’t seem willing to address in your diehard quest to “prove” this is a “German” war machine, a “black smoker” a lump of basalt etc etc etc. I am beginning to think that you are being paid to spread disinformation. Whether this is true or not is open to speculation but the number of squawks you folks put out in a desperate attempt to distract from the true anomalistic characteristics of the find seem to be driven, and desperate. Paraphrasing the words of William Shakespeare, “Methinks thou dost protest too much”
We’ve followed this story for months and have attempted to give it the fairest coverage possible. If you took the time to peruse our entire coverage of the Baltic Anomaly, you’ll see we’ve given rational explanations for the “straight panels and lines.” And we’ve never supported the Nazi anchor hypothesis…in fact, we’ve done more to damage that idea than anyone else (see our post, The Baltic Anomaly: The Nazi Connection?).
Bottom line…the Baltic Anomaly contains no “anomalistic characteristics” that can’t be explained via rational means. Take the reports of equipment failures. Equipment failures are quite common on expeditions, especially ones taking place in deep underwater environments. There’s nothing unusual about them. During its recent search for Amelia Earhart’s plane on Nikumaroro, TIGHAR experienced LOTS of equipment problems. That sort of thing just comes with the territory.
If you’re looking for tough, considered analysis of the Baltic Anomaly, then you’re in the right place. We’ll continue to do our best to report on the facts as well as speculations regarding those facts. On the other hand, if you’re looking for wild speculations with little basis in fact, you’re probably better off seeking information from the Ocean X Team’s Facebook page.
Thanks and we hope you stick around!
Well, friend, I don’t think you have addressed adequately the question of a regular magnetic field of disturbance, measurable by when electronic devices work or do not. At the surface, the limit seems to be 200 feet or so from the center of the object. The temperature of the water seems to be just below freezing within a perimeter (undetermined) of the object, a condition that should not exist in that particular geographic location. The inland sea does not have very many currents, and the “runway” and the sediment buildup at the leading edge edge of the object are unseen anywhere else in the quiet of the sea. Videos show straight lines, rectangles, perfectly round holes, long straight trenches milled to an exact 90 degree square, and what appears to be a stair case going down one of the holes. Peter Lundberg, of the expedition, has extensive knowledge of the area and has been hauling up treasure wrecks for some time. He has stated that “I’ve never seen anything like this in all of my seagoing and exploratory experience”. Now he’s the diver, and you folks are cooking up theories at desktops. His word trumps yours, and you have done nothing to address the technological exactness of some of the find. Also, you brush aside the magnetic effects with a “we don’t know, it’s open to speculation” attitude. You have never addressed also the perimeter around the object where the water temperature drops a few degrees below freezing, yet the water does not freeze in the still sea. Like I said, Lundberg’s experience trumps desktop speculation. I stand by my previous statements. Thanks.
It might interest you to know that earlier today, Dennis Asberg said, “all equipment is working well this time.” So, it would appear the “regular magnetic field of disturbance” as you call it, is no more. You can find the permalink below…you’ll have to scroll down a bit to find his comment.
Mankind didn’t invent the right angle. Right angles (along with straight lines and circular holes) do, contrary to popular opinion, appear quite often in nature. We discuss that in our article, The Baltic Anomaly: Is it Natural…or Artificial?
Finally, you should know that Peter himself has gone on record saying he is 99% certain this is a natural formation.
Based on our own experience as treasure hunters as well as Occam’s Razor, we happen to agree with him.
Obviously, we’re not part of the Ocean X Team. Nor do we have access to any data they’ve gathered. So, we’re forced to depend on the same blurry photos and vague statements as everyone else. We’ve attempted to fit all the pieces together to form the clearest picture possible. It may prove wrong, but at the moment, it’s our best guess as to the true nature of the Baltic Anomaly. Here it is: The Baltic Anomaly: The Fire and Ice Theory?
In the beginning Peter Lundberg said that he was 99% certain that the anomaly was a natural formation. Peter Lundberg and crew stated that “all electronic devices are operating normally outside the perimeter of the magnetic effects” not “all electronic devices are operating normally”. You folks are too smart to omit by carelessness, so I have to come to my own conclusions as to why you said this. Also, some of the structures observed seem to be milled depressions in the surface comprised of pits that measure several feet wide, exactly squared to depth, and several tens of feet long, and they retain their precise dimensions for the length of the channel, both ends of said channels measure exact, according to what was seen and on several instances, measured with tape measures. The electronic sonar hand held measuring devices were not operating, and would have given tolerances to the channels to the hundreth of an inch, as it was, they were limited to cloudy seas, and non electronic devices, but the measurements held for the length of a channel. Now I know about the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland, and the regularity of the formations there, but no where in any natural formation that I have heard about read about, or studied opinions about, speak of precise milled tolerances and neither has anyone else. I have several geological minded friends, myself included, who have never seen straight precise lines of any length over ten feet that hold to a thirty second of an inch tolerance, the best measurements the Lundberg crew was able to make. It was these channels, there were many of various lengths, combined with the ongoing magnetic effects, still continuing and holding constant, and the temperature anomalies that seem to also have a “perimeter” which caused Peter Lundberg to state that “I’ve never seen anything like this in all of my seagoing and exploratory experience”. In light of your obvious omissions of facts, frankly, I am left to speculate what is really going on here. The Lundberg team had planned to return on the tenth of July, and the expidition was supposed to last ten days. No reports anywhere from July 3rd, except one. Lundberg himself has appeared on You Tube stating that there is a coverup, there’s lots more down there. Given your lack of complete reportage, and media silence, and Lundberg’s You Tube pronoucements, I can easily conclude, and so can anyone else who has studied the case in detail, that you are part of the disinformation coverup. Now I may be completely wrong on that score, but despite your asertations that you have “studied the case for a year” and your lack of accurate reportage bolster the claim. Thank you for your interest in this matter.
Frankly, we’re having trouble following your train of thought here. And your handle on the facts, such as they are, appears to be quite…limited. You don’t even know Peter’s last name. Oh and do you have a reference for these “precisely milled tolerances” of yours that hold for “several tens of feet long” to a “thirty second of an inch”?
Regardless, we’ve been as accurate as possible with our reporting. We’ll continue to do so to the best of our ability.
Looks like we are boiling down to a “he said, she said” type of situation. I wasn’t clear the last post. Channels a yard wide, a yard high, and and ten feet long or longer with the same measurements within a thirty second of an inch and retaining their measurements for the length of the channel don’t appear in natural formations. The magnetic anomaly is still ongoing. The head of the Ocean X team (whatever his name is) has appeared on You Tube claiming that there is a coverup, there is lots more down there to see. I’m only reporting what I hear. Sorry for the incomprehensibility of previous posts. That’s about as clear as I can get. I won’t hassle you guys any more on this issue, time will tell what’s what. Thanks.
You might be correct. For all we know, this could be an artificial structure. But from our point of view, the evidence (and there isn’t much of it) points toward it being pillow lava. Regardless, we doubt we’ll ever know for sure.
As we see it, the true value of the Baltic Anomaly lies in the mystery itself. The mystery creates publicity. As we speak, the Ocean X Team is attempting to cash in on that publicity with a documentary, submarine rides, picture sales, corporate sponsorships, and most recently a clothing line. If they were to reveal that the Baltic Anomaly was a “natural formation,” interest in it would disappear. So, we’re not sure they actually have an incentive to solve this mystery.
To the best of our knowledge, the Ocean X Team has never mentioned anything about channels that are “ten feet long or longer” with “measurements within a thirty second of an inch.” We’re not sure where you’re getting those numbers from. Regardless, pillow lava is known for having many linear grooves that intersect at right angles.
Howdy. I did say that I wouldn’t post any more, but I would like to know what you think about Peter LundBERG (sorry for previous misspellings)and his appearance on You Tube with more images than seen previously, and his assertion that there is a coverup. Have you seen the video? Just wondering what you think, but I am sensing that you think these folks are not on the level. Is that what you think? Do you have another opinion, post video? Thanks, and I won’t keep going on, this IS my last post, and thanks for stimulating interesting discussion.
No problem at all. Actually, his last name is Lindberg…with an “i” instead of a “u.” We’re not sure what video you’re talking about. But we’ve read many of his statements and we’ve never heard him mention anything resembling a “cover-up.” We’re not even sure how there could be a cover-up since he and the Ocean X Team are the only ones working at the site. That being said, if you have a link to it, we’re happy to look at the YouTube video…
